Paramedical student dies by suicide after harassment; accused arrested

GADAG: A 19-year-old paramedical student, Vandana from Virupapur in Mundargi taluk, died by suicide on Thursday night after alleged harassment by a 47-year-old man, Kiran Karabari. Vandana was residing at a government vocational hostel for girls in Betgeri and was pursuing her paramedical studies at Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS).

According to her parents’ complaint, Karabari persistently harassed Vandana over the phone, pressuring her to marry him and threatening to release morphed photos of her on social media if she refused. Despite prior warnings from both families’ elders, he continued the harassment. Vandana was admitted to GIMS on Thursday but succumbed on Friday.

Gadag SP BS Nemagouda confirmed Karabari’s arrest. He is a physically challenged person without legs, and police are further investigating the case.
