Police Sub-Inspector Accused of Raping Woman Constable in Navi Mumbai
A 32-year-old police sub-inspector in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai township has been accused of raping a married woman constable and subjecting her to harassment, according to an official statement on Sunday.
The alleged incidents occurred between 2020 and July 2022 in the Sanpada area, where both the accused and the 26-year-old victim were stationed with the Mumbai police. The accused reportedly befriended the victim and, promising marriage, allegedly raped her multiple times at a residence in Sanpada, said the official.
Additionally, he purportedly coerced the victim into giving him a total of ₹19 lakh under various pretexts, returning only ₹14.61 lakh, as per police reports. The accused also allegedly stalked the woman and threatened her with harm if she did not leave her husband, the official from Sanpada police station added.
Initially, a complaint was lodged at Pant Nagar police station in Mumbai, leading to a ‘Zero’ FIR under sections 376 (rape), 376(2)(n) (repeated rape), 354(a) (sexual harassment), 354(d) (stalking), 506(2) (criminal intimidation), and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. The case was subsequently transferred for further investigation to the Sanpada police, who formally registered it on Saturday.
A Zero FIR can be filed at any police station, regardless of where the incident occurred, and can later be transferred to the appropriate jurisdiction for investigation.
