Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ remarkable career began with her Miss World victory in 2000, leading to a 25-year journey across Bollywood and Hollywood. However, her path was fraught with obstacles, including a failed nose surgery and industry setbacks.
In a podcast teaser with Lehren Retro, her mother, Madhu Chopra, recalled one such challenge—the denial of a grand welcome in Bareilly after Priyanka’s Miss World win. Authorities deemed beauty pageants as “exploitation of women,” refusing her the traditional reception given to winners. A directive from the Chief Minister’s office cited security concerns, barring the celebration in her hometown.
Despite early struggles, Priyanka remained resilient. Madhu compared her to a “hit-me” toy—always bouncing back stronger after being knocked down. She also credited Lara Dutta, Miss Universe 2000, for mentoring Priyanka in essential pageant skills like draping sarees, walking gracefully, and applying makeup.
A major hurdle in Priyanka’s career was a botched nose surgery that led to film rejections. But her father stood by her, reassuring her that “nothing on the human body is unfixable.” His unwavering support helped her regain confidence and continue her climb to stardom.
As the podcast wrapped up, the host suggested a Priyanka-Parineeti collaboration. Madhu enthusiastically responded, “Aapke muh mai laddoo!”—expressing hope for it to happen.
