Red Alert Issued for Coastal Karnataka Amid Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms
Mangaluru/Udupi – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on May 20 and 21, warning of intense rainfall, thunder, lightning, and gusty winds. The conditions stem from a low-pressure system developing over the Arabian Sea, signaling an active pre-monsoon phase.
Rainfall began across the region Monday afternoon. In response, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan has urged parents to keep children away from flood-prone zones, rivers, and coastlines. He directed district and taluk-level officials to remain in their headquarters, fully prepared for emergency response.
Incident commanders across the district have been instructed to maintain contact with the control room and address public grievances swiftly. Fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid the sea, with those already at sea told to return immediately.
Tourists and locals have been warned to avoid visiting riverbanks or beaches, and vigilance centres are being set up in every taluk to respond quickly to emergencies.
In Udupi, a red alert has also been issued. Deputy Commissioner Dr. K Vidya Kumari emphasized the need for heightened readiness. On Monday morning, Malpe and nearby areas witnessed heavy showers, while parts of Udupi city and surrounding regions experienced intermittent rain and thunder.
With strong winds and rough seas expected, authorities across both districts remain on high alert.
