Red alert rain shuts Anganwadis; calls for strict safety in coastal districts
In response to ongoing heavy rainfall, all Anganwadi centres in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi will remain closed on Monday, May 26. The decision was taken as a precaution to protect children and staff from weather-related risks.
Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr K Vidyakumari confirmed the closure, echoing similar action taken by the Dakshina Kannada administration due to relentless downpours across the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for both districts, predicting intense rainfall from May 25 to 27. With this alert in place, Udupi district in-charge minister and Minister for Women and Child Development, Laxmi Hebbalkar, has directed officials to enforce all necessary safety protocols.
She stressed the importance of keeping tourists away from risky areas such as riversides and beaches. “People living along rivers and seafronts may need to be shifted to safer locations if the situation demands,” the minister warned.
To support affected residents, she called for the opening of care centers and the establishment of a 24×7 helpline in all seven taluks of Udupi district.
The minister appealed to citizens to stay cautious and cooperate with local authorities as the region prepares for more rain in the coming days.
