Rising heat triggers health alert in Bengaluru, Karnataka
With dry conditions expected to persist across Bengaluru and Karnataka this week, government agencies, including the State Health Department and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), have issued a heat advisory.
The IMD has warned of heatwave conditions in Uttara Kannada until Tuesday, while temperatures range from 35°C to 38°C along the coast and North Interior Karnataka. In South Interior Karnataka, districts like Mandya and Shivamogga are experiencing similar conditions, while Bengaluru’s temperatures hover between 32°C and 34°C. Notably, Koppal and Chintamani recorded a sharp 2.5°C rise in the past 24 hours.
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has reported above-normal temperatures, with the city expected to see highs of 33°C and lows of 20°C. Authorities urge the public, especially vulnerable groups like infants, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, to avoid peak heat hours, wear lightweight cotton clothing, and stay hydrated.
Common heat-related illnesses include rashes, swelling, cramps, fainting, and heatstroke. The Health Department advises drinking fluids like ORS, lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices with added salt while avoiding alcohol, tea, and sugary drinks.
Citizens are encouraged to monitor weather updates and minimize outdoor activities between 11 AM and 4 PM. Emergency services (108/102) should be contacted if symptoms like confusion, unconsciousness, or lack of sweating occur.
