New Delhi: From thrillers to slice-of-life narratives to comedies to social dramas, teleplays cover a whole gamut of the quintessential human experiences with something special for everyone. Here is a December playlist where you will find both timeless tales and potential favourites.

Sir Sir Sarla

Makrand Deshpande’s much-loved classic, ‘Sir Sir Sarla’ is the story of Professor Palekar and his student Sarla the pretty, innocent young girl who seems to be enamoured by her mentor and Phanidhar who shares a love-hate relationship with the professor. The play explores the bond between the students and their professor, which faces many ebbs and flows. Secrets are revealed, accusations are thrown, and the three lives remain interwoven for many years to come. The teleplay stars Makarand Deshpande, Aahana Kumra, Sanjay Dadhich and Anjum Sharma. Watch it on Airtel Spotlight.

Ladies Sangeet

Radha is to wed her beau Siddharth at her ancestral home in the hinterlands while her enthusiastic family members and their wedding planner are trying to make the wedding resemble the ones in Bollywood! The play uses wit, humour, music and drama to bring out extremely relevant challenges faced by families and individuals, especially against the backdrop of a big, fat wedding. It stars Joy Sengupta, Nidhi Singh, Siddhant Karnick, Loveleen Mishra, Harsh Khurana, Sarika Singh, Monica Gupta, Niranjan Iyengar, Mallika Singh and Nivedita Bhargava. It is written and directed by Purva Naresh. Watch this slice of life comedy on Tata Sky.

Gidh

Saleema’s mundane life is disrupted after an unexpected visit from Salma who claims to be her sister-in-law. As the plot unfolds, both the women share the miseries of their respective lives caused by the same man Junaid, Salma’s brother and Saleema’s husband. Together, they decide to do put an end to their suffering. What in fact transpires changes one of their lives forever, but not in the way that she had expected. This engrossing thriller stars Sana Jafri, Raasti Farooq and Adeel Afzal. The filming director is Kanwal Khoosat and the play can be watched on Tata Sky.

Jhaanjhar Di Paanwan Chhankaar

This teleplay is based on a youthful, visually impaired man who chooses to live away from his over-protective mother. He forms a close friendship with his neighbour (an actor) who is set to essay an unusual role in a film. The play addresses how society responds to individuals with disabilities, be it physical or emotional, and regards them as pariahs. The play stars Sarmad Khoosat (also the co-director), Samiya Mumtaz, Zain Afzal, Iman Shahid and is directed by Kanwal Khoosat. The play is available on Tatasky Theatre.

Shyam Ki Mummy

This is a comical take on the flaws of the modern education system, where a concerned mother forces her son to chase the highest rank in his exams while depriving him of the joys of childhood. A comedy that many Indians will relate to, this play is a laughter riot. It stars Nirmiti Sawant, Milind Phatak, Dharmaj Joshi, Rahul Kumar and Sayali Sudhakar. Directed by Purshottam Berde for stage and filmed by Dynanesh Bhalekar, the teleplay can be watched on Tata Sky.
