Global Rise of Smartphone Usage

But, it has been observed that the time people spend using their smartphones is on the rise all over the world.

In the first quarter of this year, the average daily time spent on smartphones in the US, India, Mexico, and Turkey was for the first time longer than four hours. On the other hand, the average daily time spent on smartphones is over five hours in Indonesia, Brazil, and South Korea. The rise in India is striking: Indians spent 80% more time on their smartphones in the first quarter of 2021 than they did in 2019.

The estimate is that the current world population is almost 7.9 billion and that the number of smartphone users is around 3.8 billion. So, approximately half of the world’s population has access to this technology today.

Smartphone Usage in India

The rise of the popularity of smartphones in India is exceptional.

In 2019 the average time spent on a smartphone by an Indian user was 3.3. hours per day. Today it is 4.6 hours per day! This represents a rise of 39% within a year. When it comes to the choice of OS, Android is the undisputed king of the Indian market with a share of 95%, while iOS holds only about 5%.

A recent study commissioned by Vivo India found that the average Indian will spend one-third of their waking hours using their smartphone. This aggregates to about 1800 hours per year. Furthermore, the study showed that every third person surveyed felt that they can’t have a five-minute conversation without checking their phone.

The individuals included in the study were between 18 and 45 years old, 64 percent were male and 36 percent female. The study showed that 75% of them owned their first smartphone already in their teens.

Prabhu Ram of Cybermedia Research, concluded: “Our survey results demonstrate that the dependency over smartphones has increased. While smartphones will continue to be the primary go-to device, smartphone users have realized that periodically switching-off would help benefit their personal health”.

Most Popular Apps in India

India is also specific when it comes to what apps are the most popular ones in the country. In fact, local mobile app developers manage to keep up with the latest trends and often create some of the most popular apps in India. For this reason, our list of the most popular apps in India will include many that are locally produced.

Let’s take a look at some of the frequently used smartphone apps in India:

Gaana

Gaana is one of the most popular music streaming apps in India at the moment. It has over 150 million monthly users! Currently, the service offers you more than 3 million songs in its catalog. Swiggy

This is the largest such service in India. It was founded in 2014 in Bangalore and is currently available in 500 cities across the country!

India is experiencing rapid technological development. One of the best signs of this development is the spread of smartphone technology across the country, as well as the huge increase in the time Indians spend using their smartphones.

An especially good sign of India’s development is the number of locally-based companies that are developing various smartphone apps, as well as the fact that these locally produced apps are also some of the most popular in the country.
