2nd Episode of Spearhead Academy’s webinar series; Media in the era of social media

Mangaluru: Spearhead Academy, A centre for Media Studies, a unit of Village TV (R.), proudly hosted the second episode of the monthly webinar series, ‘Straight from the Journalist’. The webinar took place on 18 January 2022, Wednesday at 5:30 pm. Spearhead Academy a budding centre for media studies is paving its way to being one of the up-to-date information providers by selecting topics that are most relevant and needed in the market media. ‘Media in Era of Social Media’ was the topic of discussion in the webinar which was proposed by the resource person himself, Dr Vasu H V, Activist and Project Head of Eedina.com, a well-known online portal of the day. Dr Vasu is a much sought after resource person and a passionate journalist who aims to bring into life all the values and principles of journalism. Social media being the most debated topic of the day we wanted a non-journalist scholar to respond and raise his perspective on the topic. This was ably done with precision by Dr Kumaraswamy Bejjihalli, writer and social activist from Bangalore.

Spearhead Academy is unique in its policy as it keeps less of formalities and more of information on the platform of this sought. The host of the day Mr Roshan Honest Raj, Vice Principal, Spearhead Academy affectionately welcomed the guests of the day and introduced the resource person in nucleus and handed over the platform to Dr Vasu direct away without any delay. Dr Vasu talking on the trends in media said that the journalism is witnessing a drastic change in the era. Not less than soon the newspapers will be just a tale as the digital platforms are grabbing the entire reader world. One of the largest reasons for the same is timeliness. He even said that not even the television journalism is able to catch up with the pace of digital and social media journalism of today. No more the mainstream media break the news but the social media breaks the news right then and there, where the action has taken place. Every person who has a smart phone and social media today is a newsmaker and distributor. Perhaps this might look like a threat for the mainstream media but that’s the hard core reality of the ground.

Responding to the topic and resource person, Dr Kumaraswamy Bejjihalli made a very impeccable observation. He said while mainstream media is being outdated with the advancement of the social media, the accuracy and verification are being sacrificed. But at the same time mainstream media too has its fair role in the foul play on the society. Therefore counter-culture creating fair and just start-up journalists and media are to be encouraged and supported.

CA Valerian Dalmeida, Mentor and Advisor of Spearhead Academy in his presidential address said that we are so bombarded with news from urban zones so much that the love, affection, and goodness in which the villagers are contributing to the humanity is utterly forgotten. They need to be brought on screens today for the entire world. This is exactly the prime objective of the newskarnataka.com, newskannada.com and spearhead Academy. This can’t be achieved over night by a few only, but more like-minded people must join hands and move on to create a new trend in media.

The webinar was well attended to, with more than 60 participants. There were participants from all over the state irrespective of age and experience. It will be wrong not to mention the gathering was such a high quality one with a number of Scholars, doctors, writers, activists, professors and students. There were several questions asked by the involved participants, to which the resource person answered with at most precision and accuracy.

The host expressed gratitude to the august gathering, particularly to the resource persons of the day, foremen of the Village TV Trust (R.) Mangaluru, and all the participants. A special mention was made to priests, scholars, professors, and doctors to acknowledge the presence. The academy will continue with more of its kind.
