State releases Rs 1 crore for memorial of former CM S Bangarappa

Shivamogga: The Karnataka Government has announced that it has released Rs 1 crore as grant for the construction a memorial for former chief minister Sarekoppa Bangarappa. The memorial will be built in the Soraba taluk of the Shivamogga district.

The announcement was made by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who was in Shivamogga on Monday to inaugurate a park that was constructed as homage to Bangarappa on his 87th birth anniversary.

Sarekoppa Bangarappa was elected MLA from the Soraba constituency for six consecutive terms (1967 to 1996). He also served as the twelfth Chief Minister of Karnataka (October 1990 to 1992). Bangarappa also served as Lok Sabha MP from Shivamogga and worked with the BJP and JD(S). He succumbed to a brief illness in the year 2011.

“The officials have been directed to release Rs 1 crore for the construction of a memorial for S Bangarappa here,” CM BSY said

The park, that was inaugurated today, The park, was constructed at a cost of Rs 21.15 lakh, according to the Chief Minister’s Office. The responsibility to maintain the park has been entrusted to the Soraba Town Panchayat.

Recalling the late leader, CM BSY said that Bangarappa is still remembered fondly for his projects and progressive approach in the fields of education, health, and agriculture. He added that Bangarappa was rightly known as a champion of the backward classes several schemes that he implemented that were aimed at the welfare of farmworkers, underprivileged and rural residents.

Refuting Congress leader Siddaramaiah’s allegations that the state and central governments were yet to give “a single paisa as compensation” to those affected by the floods in north Karnataka, BSY said that the government has been at the forefront in the work to develop the state even amid during the coronavirus pandemic. “There is no scope for regional imbalance. We are committed to developing all parts of the state,” he added.
