Shivamogga: Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who was is in the district, informed that the work on the new airport in Sogane is expected to be completed by the end of December next year and become operational by January or February of 2022.
He was speaking to reporters after visiting the airport on Monday.
The construction of the 2,050 meter runway was was already approved, but it got another approval to increase the length to 3,200 meters to facilitate the landing of large aircrafts, including the airbus.
In addition, Rs 75 crore will be sanctioned in the next budget, he said.
BSY informed that the state government has already requested the Union Civil Aviation ministry to take the Shivamogga airport under the Udan project.
The land acquisition process for the building of the airport has been and adequate compensation will be provided to those who had to give up their land for the project, Yediyurappa assured.
The development of the airport is expected to accelerate development in Shivamogga and the surrounding districts. BSY added that this would encourage more industries.
