Award winning “Railway Children” releases in Mangaluru today!

Mangaluru: In a world so saturated in every field one can think of, finding a niche is very difficult and more often than not… it does not pay off. The movie industry, like any other, is flooded with so many films, both short and long, that it would take more than a lifetime of pure movie watching to have seen every single movie that has ever existed.

In such a brimming industry, it is very hard for a budding talent to bloom without the help of a “Godfather” or greasing someone’s hands to get your movie out into the light. Once it does get out into the light, it not only has to compete with small fish like itself, but also with the whales of the industry…

How, then, does one garner a fan following and revenues that will justify your efforts and hard work? I have no answer for you. All I can do is bring your notice to one such small fish: Railway Children.

This multiple award winning gem of a Kannada movie, has been directed by Prithvi Konanur and produced by TinDrum Beats, and will be releasing today, December 22. The movie features the fresh faces of Manohara K, Syed Pervez, Yash Shetty, Divya M R, Karthik and Parimala in lead roles, and first premiered at the Mumbai International Film Festival in October 2016.

Manohara K, who plays Jollu, won the National Film Award for Best Child Artist and the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Child Actor (Male) for his performance.

The movie, inspired by the real incidences experienced by the NGO Sathi and those in the research book “Rescuing Railway Children” by Lalitha Iyer and Malcolm Harper, follows a 12-year-old runaway boy named Raju, who has to learn the unsavoury parts of life on a railway platform. He meets and befriends Jollu, after getting involved in a gang dealing in illegal business on the platform. Jollu shows him the ropes of the business and soon decide to start a business of their own.

The movie has streaks of themes like physical abuse, sexual abuse, drugs and addiction. The movie relies heavily on the child actors, who effortlessly carry the movie forward.

Although the movie does not have any big names attached to it, it has managed to bag awards at the International, National and regional levels, namely, Best Child Actor, 64th National Film Awards, Best Child Actor, State Film Awards 2017, Second Best Film, State Film Awards 2017, Ecumenical Jury Special Mention, 57th Zlin Film Festival, Jury Special Mention, Asian Film Festival, and Selection for Indian Panorama, IFFI 2017, and has been nominated for many more.

So my request to you is to take time out of your weekend, and support this movie and the team behind it by buying the tickets either online or at the ticket booth. Let us not let gems like these slip through our fingers.
