“The Elephant Whisperers” was named the winner of the 95th Academy Awards, marking India’s first win in the Documentary Short Subject category. Guneet Monga hasn’t brought the Oscar to India for the first time. Guneet Monga’s documentary ‘Period. End of Sentence’ won the Oscar for Documentary Short Subject in 2019.
The story revolves around a family who adopts two orphan baby elephants from Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The film “The Elephant Whisperers” depicts an unbreakable bond between two orphaned elephants and their carers. Sikhya Entertainment’s Guneet Monga and Achin Jain produced it.
Indigenous communities have a strong connection to our environment and the creatures that share it with us. There is a lot to be learned from their way of life and beliefs. Bommon and Bellie dedicated their lives to caring for and healing one orphaned elephant named Raghu.
In Kartiki Gonsalves’ documentary short ‘The Elephant Whisperers,’ Bomman bathes Raghu in the same pond where he bathes. Bellie feeds Raghu with her hands, just as she would a child. Raghu was healed because of their unity and perseverance. As a result, they became a family.
We sincerely hope that by sharing the extraordinary story of Bommon, Bellie, and Raghu, we will be able to discover new ways of finding love within ourselves, our communities, our environment, and the creatures with whom we coexist. The Elephant Whisperers hope to pave the way for more Raghus to find their chosen family and persevere in the face of adversity.
