The Boy, The Mole, the Fox and the Horse won the Oscar in 2023 for Best Animated Short Film. It is based on Charlie Mackesy’s (a British-born artist, illustrator and author) bestselling book from 2019, which was loved by readers all around the world. With its breathtaking images and insightful spiritual messages, this lovely 38-minute film addressed both young and old audiences.

There are four characters, yet there are only two main voices: the boy who is seeking connection and significance, and the animals’ wisdom. The Boy (voiced by Jude Coward Nicholl) is lost and unsure about where to look for a home. To get home, he needs to find a river, so he encounters the Mole (Tom Hollander), who recalls that an old mole advised him to do so. The two then set out together. When the Mole is polite to the Fox (Idris Elba), who initially seems to be a threat, he joins them on their quest. When a storm hits and they can see a town in the distance, they encounter the Horse (Gabriel Byrne) in a forest, who is comforting and very helpful.

The animation, which was created in collaboration with more than 120 animators from around the world, was initially pencil-drawn before being inked over and hand-painted. Although there isn’t much context provided in the movie, the boy’s emotional journey holds our attention. There is some, but not much, action, and it is not fast-paced. Since it is reflective, some people in our action-adventure culture may find it unappealing. But there are many factors to take into account for those who do view it and reflect on it.

The themes of companionship, empathy, and kindness are explored in this film. The group’s adventure teaches us about companionship and how to accept individuals despite their differences, flaws, and mistakes. It is full of profound teachings that will surprise you.

The predominantly white, blue, and gold colour scheme adds to the film’s beauty because it is quite simple. The Boy and the Mole (Tom Hollander), who speak and act in an innocent, curious manner, make Mackesy’s complex views enjoyable.
