If a person is courageous, her/his courage would be celebrated. If the person is courageous, s/he would be kept at an upper pedestal. S/he would be given certain responsibilities of leadership.
A lot of people do not observe that the courage which is being expressed by an individual may not be just the courage but might be the suppression of fear. It could be a way to overcome one’s insecurities and self-doubt.
The courage could also be expressed as a reaction to overwhelming fear.
The questions are “whether such courage is long-lasting?”, “Is dependent on the fear?”. Another dimension that we can also look into is “whether that expression of courage will diminish as the fear causing agent (a situation, person, or place) is absent?”
Moreover, courage is not about not knowing fear. But knowing the fear and then overcoming it.
Suppose, a group of people is walking in the countryside and suddenly they see a cobra with its hood up, on its way. In case, if a person takes a stick and hits it within no time and kills it, then that is not courage.
It was just an instantaneous reaction. The person may not be able to repeat it if we bring another cobra in front of him. But if a person can be watchful of the cobra, find out different modes of safer ways of rehabilitating it into the jungle, and then catches it without hurting it and putting others at risk, that will be considered courage.
Hence, we should be mindful while appreciating the courage of an individual without generalizing every action of courage as courage.
