As a trend today diet has become routine. It is increasingly seen that people are deciding and changing their eating habits on their own without any expert consultation. However, similar eating habits for all season is not recommended for good health. For example, during winters if we eat a certain type of food, in summer we should shift to a different type of food. Our food habits should change according to the season. As much as possible consume seasonal variety of cereals, vegetables and fruits, says Dr. Anuradha from Kakunje Ayurveda Clinic, Moodabidri.

A health of a person is dependent on the amount of sleep and his digestive capacity. The enthusiasm to do any work is also a reflection of a healthy body. Similarly, disturbed sleep or lack of sleep in the night denotes health issues, she informs.

Stating that waking up fresh without any lethargy is a sign of healthy body, she said that in winters one can eat a lot of sweets as well as increase the quantity of food consumption. Our eating habits should be according to the capacity of our digestive system.

Further, during spring season there is a possibility of phelgm accumulation in the body. The problem of phlegm accumulation does not come due to mere cough and mucus but due to kapha, one of the three doshas. Ayurveda is based on the idea that the world is made up of five elements, aakasha (space), jala (water), prithvi (earth), teja (fire), and vayu (air), and a combination of each element results in three doshas known as vata, kapha, and pitta. The main feature of kapha problem is increase of body weight due to lethargy. Therefore, it is important to consume food variety and develop eating habits that help easy digestion during spring. Drinking too much water too is detrimental to health. In the same way, spices such as, pepper and ginger can be consumed during the season to keep the phlegm at bay. Sweets and curds too should be avoided to stop aggravating kapha feature during the season, suggests Dr. Anuradha.

It is not good for health to sleep for long hours soon after lunch during the spring season, she says and advises to take a nap of just ten minutes in the season.

Anuradha observes that during the summer season we see that the environment around us has dried up. Similarly our body too heats up during the season. Generally during summer season, we witness people consuming butter milk sprinkled with spices and food laced with spices which are infact not good for health. Instead of such food, Biranda and Indian Sarsaparilla root juice can be consumed. It is also advised to consume sweet dishes during the season. However, sweet consumption should have a limit, she cautioned.

Lastly, during the rainy season vata problem might persist in people. Therefore, during the season generally our digestive system becomes weak. Burps, heartburn, and gastric problems are quite common during the time. It can be noted that both vata and pitta problems escalate during the season, she warns and adds that therefore food that will keep the two doshas in control should be consumed.

If our food habits are in accordance with season, then we can maintain and protect our health. The mission of our body is to keep us alive, and therefore listen to it more, less to our palate. We will only help our body by supplying it exactly what it needs because that is when it will stay healthy, Dr. Anuradha adds.
