Directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar (2014) is a story of a father (Mathew McConaughey) who leaves his daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy/Jessica Chastain) and son Tom (Timothée Chalamet) on an interstellar journey to discover a new home planet for humans. The film, indeed, like any other Nolan film, is one of my favourites.

Cooper discovers the last remnants of NASA, which went underground some time ago, after decoding a mysterious code, and is persuaded by Professor Brand (Michael Caine) to pilot a space shuttle on a dangerous mission, passing through a wormhole near Saturn discovering a sustainable planet on the other side.

Leaving behind his family, Cooper chooses to pilot the mission, which emotionally destroys Murphy, and he joins the team members Brand (Anne Hathaway), Doyle (Wes Bentley), Romilly (David Gyasi), and the two robots TARS (Billy Irwin) and CASE (Josh Stewart) on a journey into the unknowns of space in the hopes of saving humanity from extinction.

Cooper and Murph’s relationship, a father-daughter love bond, is what binds the entire film together which is beyond galaxies, wormholes, time, worlds, and reality.

The clock is always ticking, although it does so at a different rate than the rest of our universe and following the expedition, lot of things change between Cooper and Murph.

McConaughey’s acting makes Cooper an impactful protagonist, whether he is grieving through decades of video messages from his daughter that he missed while he was on a world where time moves much faster or making humankind’s first leap into a black hole.

The majority of the scientific notions that Nolan employs in the film are based on true theories, which is extremely perplexing. This also relates to one of the film’s major flaws, which is making laborious efforts to explain scientific concepts to a general audience, though in all earnest.

Yet, interstellar has developed a stunningly breath-taking look into our universe. Whether it’s a simple earth setting or any other environment, Hoyt Van Hoytema’s cinematography is truly outstanding, working in sync with Nolan’s great vision for his film. The scenes captured are from the wide-angle shots of space created for Interstellar.

There is no doubt that the film was meant to be a commercial success with Christopher Nolan as director, Matthew McConaughey leading the cast and visual effect team.

The film’s success is due to its subject matter. It’s a story with big concepts set in an even bigger setting, and it’s the kind of stunning cinematic experience that will take your breath away.

Interstellar won Academy Award in 2015 for Best Achievement in Visual effects by Paul J. Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Ian Hunter and Scott R. Fisher. It also got nomination for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Picture, Original Score, Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Sound Editing and Best Achievement in Production Design.
