Vachana Sahitya period is a prominent period in the history of Karnataka. The period saw a lot of significant changes in the society. Vachanakaras were responsie for many were social reforms. This period has contributed a lot to the Kannada literature as well. The hub of this Vachana movement was Kudalasangama, where the Vachanakaras gathered and discussed several issues.
Today Kudalasangama is an important piligrimage centre of Lingayat community. Located in Hunagund Taluk of Bagalkot District, it is the place that sees confluence of rivers Krishna and Malaprabha, thus getting the name Kudalasangama. It is here that the temple of Kudalasangama Deva (Lord Shiva) is located. From the temple, which is on the banks of the river, one can witness the confluence of the rivers, which is a sight to behold.
Eventhough it is a religious centre, the place is rich in natural beauty and architectural aspects. The Kudalasangama temple was built by Chalukyas during the early days of 13th century. Basavanna the prominient Vachanakara of 12th century spent his last days and left his worldly body at Kudalasangama. The place where he left his body for heavenly abode is called as Aikya Mantapa. It is where the Samadhi of Basavanna is situated.
Alamatti dam, Aihole, Pattadakallu, and Badami are among the places that are located close to Kudalasangama. The best time to visit Kudalasangama is between October and March.
