Mysuru has been blessed with nature’s and Wodeyar’s contributions. It is one of the most beautiful Districts in the State. We have heard about natural falls when we arrive at the District’s tourist destinations, but many of us had never seen man-made falls.

Mysuru has man-made falls named after Balmuri Falls. It gives immense pleasure of greenery to the people of Mysuru, Bengaluru and many tourists. With scenic beauty and a relaxed environment, the Balmuri Falls is an idyllic spot to head to for a picnic or a daylong getaway from Mysuru or Bengaluru.

The falls is located 18 km away from the City. It is also close to Krishna Raj Sagara (KRS) Dam. The sparkling water of the Cauvery River is sure to bring a smile to your face and soothe your eyes and ears.

It is interesting to note that the Balmuri waterfall is not a real waterfall. Are you surprised? Let us solve the mystery for you.

It is a man-made waterfall that is caused due to a check dam built across the River Cauvery. When the water overflows the check dam, it forms a long and lovely cascade. The waterfall derives its name from the right turn that the river takes near the site. Bala means ‘right’ and Muri means ‘curve’ in Kannada. So, the name Balmuri is a combination of the two words, Bala and Muri.

The water cascades down from a height of six feet at Balmuri Falls. You may not find the water gushing down at great speed, as is the case with most natural waterfalls, but its beauty lies in its serenity.

KRS, Mysuru Palace and Jayachamarajendra Zoo are nearby places one can visit during the Balmuri trip.
