Considering marriage a sacred institution, a man’s autonomy over his wife without her consent was declined to be accepted as rape in a split verdict, recently.

India is known for its values, culture, tradition and the worth given to an institution called family. We are growing in an era of metropolis where ‘right and wrong’ depends upon on an individuals’ take rather being a societal categorisation of rights and wrongs.

Progressive realisation to bring in rectification is indeed an empathetic process. But the fear is, a thin line where erosion of values occur in the name of modernised thought and metropolis act.

Supreme Court verdict on considering prostitution as a profession is one such dilemma among Indians. The verdict received equal amount of appreciation as well as rejection. Prostitution existed in the world from ancient times. India too has an ancient history in this regard. But Whosoever practiced it were denied the societal status and dignity. Current verdict in consideration with Article 21 is indeed welcoming. But in a broader matter of fact, legalisation of the sex work in India has just made the life easier for the existing Industries.

UNAIDS estimated there were 657,829 prostitutes in the country as of 2016. India is regarded to be the country with world’s largest sex industry. Considering the level of employment opportunity in India, legalising the sex work might further increase the number of people indulging in sex work.

Poverty and Unemployment are the two main causes for one to choose the path of prostitution. No man or a women like to share thy self physically until and unless an emotions like love, trust and belief are felt towards the opposite individual. Imagining an Individual to willfully choose the sex work as a profession will surely be the last option an individual may possess.

An initiative in the verdict of Budhadev Karamaskar vs State of West Bengal directing the central and state governments to encourage rehabilitation cultures, providing of technical and vocational skills. And so the target groups will be facilitated with other modes of employment opportunities along facilitating a dignified living.
