Mangaluru: Still standing tall and strong, our Central Market since pre-independence era in Mangaluru and its vendors now, have a tough run now. On one side the demonetization heat, on the other the retail vendors are seen on the outskirts of the market due to the lack of basic facilities leading to the huge traffic jams in the adjoining roads. Inadequate parking facility for the market customers is an added woe.

Speaking to newskarnataka.com, Janardhan Salian, Secretary of Market Association said, “There is no basic facility for drinking water in the market. All day long the vendors have to struggle and sell the vegetables, fruits etc. They have to run around for water. We have been struggling for clean drinking water since nearly 15 years”.

“There is no proper parking space for the customers and the vendors as the unauthorised hawkers have occupied the parking space outside the market. There are shops that are made for these illegal vendors inside the market but still there are various vendors found outside the market and they have created the problem for traffic and parking”, he lamented.

The other members of the association added saying, “There is a rule that the no retail vendors are to be found within 200 meters range of the Central Market. It is our right and we will fight for it. We have approached the MCC a lot many times but no action has been taken till date. We pay our rent on time and in return we are deprived of our rights and basic necessities. However, a recent meeting with the authority concerned has given us some hope.”

“There was a proposal that the market had to be demolished and changed. It was welcomed by the vendors because it’s for a good cause but an unscientific execution could put the prospects of nearly 300 vendors at stake. The MCC has to make necessary arrangements before they proceed in this direction.” said another member of the association Mohammed.

The current situation is true as addressed by the vendors in the market. The market association is striving and leaving no stone unturned for the wellbeing of all who are working in the market.

Responding to the grievances of the Central Market vendors Mayor Harinath said, “We have a team which has been specially formed to remove the illegal petty shops and businesses and we have called for tender in this regard. We have a notice from NITK to demolish the Central Market and the proposal was made six years ago. We will be issuing notices to the vendors to vacate. There is a government rule to auction the market after it completes 12 years”.

When asked about alternative steps taken to relocate the vendors, mayor said, “We will be issuing notices after consulting the lawyer in advance and we will approximately give 6 months’ time to shift. We have almost repaired the whole market at a cost of Rs 45 Lakh. But it is difficult to shift all the vendors. On humanitarian grounds, we will be giving first preference to those vendors in the new market-both with shops inside the market and outside”.

Going towards the tag of smart city, these grievances are to be addressed smartly so that the members of the public are not the sufferers at the final count.
