You must have heard of gifted children, prodigies, people with impairments but an immense talent that eventually shoots to the horizon. Muhammad Shibil is one such 22-year-old from Kerala who loves drawing, sketching, and painting. Presently, he does commissioned portraits and other artworks, shipping worldwide! In a short interview with NewsKarnataka, the artist gave his thoughts about the journey.

When asked what was the exact beginning of his love for pencil and colours, he answered, “I started drawing when I was just a 4 year old!” A diploma student from Shilpa Chitra College of Fine Arts, Pattambi, Kerala, Shibil, is a deaf artist who has 11K followers on Instagram, going by the handle: artshibil. He said that the gradual development of his art took place in his school days, where during seventh grade held a major turn.

Speaking on the difficulties of being a deaf artist, the 22-year-old contended that the inability to hear and listen did impact his personality and the growth of his talent. However, it did not stop him from achieving what he always desired. If you go through his page on Instagram, you’d realize that he doesn’t stick to the classic black and white portraits but he also indulges in multicolor artwork. He said, “I like multicolor artwork because it looks more original to me.”

In conversation about the growing pace of digital art in the art industry, the deaf artist seemed to be unaffected by the increasing preference by customers or viewers. He candidly said, “Digital art is good!” and waved off the competitiveness that other artists probably would have considered. Nonetheless he affirmed that digital art may hinder the true talent of artists since the technology does most of the work.

Shibil is a self taught artist, who did not receive any special training despite his auditory impairments. Albeit the absence of professional guidance, the artist claimed that being a self taught artist has its own perks. For instance, “the freedom in teaching oneself” is more of a pleasure than a burden.

Social media evidently played a huge role in the journey of this boy. From increasing his loyal customer base and the number of lovers of his artwork to shipping worldwide, social media has helped Shibil come a long way. “Social media helped me reach people, and showcase my hard work,” he maintained. He also has a YouTube channel where he posts videos of him making his artworks.

With the everlasting support from his family, friends and ardent fans of his artwork, Shibil intends to become a renowned artist and gain more experience. He aspires to bring different types of arts, reflect and introduce multicultural multidimensional art to his viewers and admirers!
