Karnataka literature and music have a glorious heritage of its own. The Chalukyas of Badami, the Hoysalas and the Wodeyars of Mysore made their own valuable contributions to the cultural world of Karnataka. Under the patronage of such kings, many poets and Keertankaras enriched the music world of Karnataka. Particularly, the contribution of Haridasa saints is invaluable. Among that the notable saint in Dasa tradition was Daasashreshta Kanakadasa.

Kanakadasa, popularly known as “Daasashreshta Kanakadasa”, was born on December 3 1509 as Thimmappa Nayaka in Shiggaon of Haveri District. He was a Haridasa Saint, Philosopher and renowned composer of Carnatic music along with being a reformer. He is known for his Keertanas and Ugabhoga. Like other Haridasas he used simple kannada for his compositions.

According to a narrative, earlier he was a warrior at Bankapura Fort. Later he became be a saint. His early works include “Narasimha Stotra”, “Ramadhyana Mantra”, and “Mohanatarangini.”

The major works of Kanakadasa are
• Nalacharithre
• Haribhakthisaara
• Nrisimhastava
• Ramadhyanacharithe
• Mohanatarangini

Kanakadasa wrote about more than 200 carnatic music compositions Keertanas, Ugabhogas, Padas and Philosophical songs besides five major works.

It is said Kanakadasa likely had a connection with Udupi as he was the disciple of Vyasateertha Swamiji. The priests would not let him enter the matha. It is believed that something unnatural happened when Kanakadasa was outside the temple, waiting to be allowed to enter, but when he was not allowed to have the darshan of Krishna, the diety turned around to face West. The side diety faced is today called as the “Kanakana Kindi”. But many scholars say that the story was not true.

Considering Kanakadasa’s contribution to the world of literature, the Government of Karnataka announced his birthday as State festival and it is celebrated every year. State Government also instituted “The Kanaka Shree ” award to recognise and honour individuals who contribute to the promotion of the values and literature of Kanakadasa. The award comes with citation, a shawl and cash prize. Till date 12 people have been honoured with the award.

In 1990, the Government of India honoured Kanakadasa by releasing a postal stamp in his name.

A movie named “Bhakta Kanakadasa” was produced in Kannada. Late Actor Dr. Rajkumar played the role of Kanakadasa. Famous Director Girish Karnad had made documentary film Kanaka-Purandara on the two bhakthi poets, Kanakadasa and Purandaradasa.
