Madanthyar parish youth wrap the scrap and the sick and needy clap!

Use and throw has become a day to day policy for us today. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle has almost lost its track. What can be done with the scrap that we have? Can this scrap be used towards a better society? Have you ever thought about it?

The youth of Madanthyar parish have come up with an unique idea to sell scrap to serve the sick in the parish.

Collection of scrap here is not only limited to clear the junk from the house or make little money from it as well, but for a higher cause. Speaking to Newskarnataka’s Joel Pinto, Arvin Moras (youth of Madanthyar parish) explained the idea behind this unique initiative.

Can you tell us more about this “Sell Scrap to Serve the Sick” initiative?

This initiative was planned with an intention of the welfare of the sick and the needy of the parish. We visit the houses of the parish and collect the scrap that the people are willing to donate for a cause. With the collaboration of all the youth in the parish and with the cooperation of our parish priest Rev Fr. Lawrence Mascarenhas, this service was flagged off.

When did you start this initiative and how is the cooperation from the people?

We started this initiative from November this year, and it has been a month since then. We go to houses each day in the evenings and collect the scrap. As we announce in the church on Sundays to which ward or houses we go, the people also are very cooperative and they keep the scrap ready to be loaded to the truck. We were able to collect nearly three trucks of scrap in a day, sell it and muster up more than Rs 80000. Fr. Lawrence, Fr Praveen (Asst. Parish Priest) and Fr. Jerome, also join us while we collect scrap from the houses.

How are you going to help the sick through this initiative?

We are going to collect the money and help the sick people in their treatment and also conduct some welfare activities for the needy for the sustenance of their life. This amount will be utilised for the welfare of not only the Christian families but others too. We have a target estimate to collect nearly Rs 1.5 Lakh in a stipulated period, and we are sure that we will be able to achieve it.

What is the message that you want to give to our readers?

There are various ways to serve the sick and the needy. We have chosen one to help the people. Though risky, we have chosen a path less travelled. Let this initiative help many to find creative ways to help the needy. Let us help to build a better society.

Scrap can be gold, if one looks at it that way. Creative young minds always have left our world wonderstruck. Let us believe in the policy of giving rather than storing up things for ourselves, for a better society taking this reference. let us find more productive and effective ways to build a better society.
