Ever walked into a massage centre and been offered a host of ‘menu’ on Ayurvedic treatments to choose from? In many cases, the commercial players are known to confuse their gullible clients with promotional packages and offers on Ayurvedic treatments, instead of providing them with a reliable healthcare solution. “It’s like a doctor asking a patient, what medicine or diagnosis they would prefer for ailment,” says Dr Keshavraj (BAMS), a partner at Sri Vedamaayu Ayurveda Multi-Specialty Hospital (SVAMSH).

According to the 32-year old practitioner, Dr Keshavraj says that Ayurveda focuses on ‘Rogi Chikitsa’ (treating patient) and not ‘Roga Chikitsa’ (treating disease). The holistic and personalised approach makes Ayurveda stand out from conventional medicine, as it offers customized solutions for each patient. “For instance if a person suffering from diabetes or hypertension (without consultation) is subjected to massage with steam it will only aggravate their condition and even be fatal,” Dr Keshavraj says.

Noted as the ‘The Best Ayurvedic Doctor’, Dr Keshavraj says that every patient must have the ‘Right’ to undergo consultation before undergoing an Ayurvedic rejuvenation or wellness practices. “It’s only a comprehensive consultation and examination that would uncover the root cause of ailments. The consultants must carefully note down the detailed health history of the patients and only then suggest remedies; including lifestyle changes, tackling emotional stress or the application of Ayurvedic herbs, supplements and therapy,” he says.

Using ancient Ayurvedic techniques, SVAMSH provides several treatments lie Nadi Pariksha (Pulse diagnosis), Swedana (Steam therapy), Balya (Invigorating or strengthen), Basti (Colon cleansing), Udvartana (Herbal Dry massage), Netra Tarpana (Preventive and Curative therapy for Eye disorder), Abhyanga (Oil massage), Shirolepa (For stress disorder) and Shirodhara (For improved sleep quality and anxiety reduction).

The hospital also specialises in Panchakarma treatments, the five procedures aimed to eliminate the vitiated Doshas from the body. They are Vamana Karma (Stimulating Emesis), Virechana (Cleansing the Small Intestine), Nasya (Nasal cavity cleansing), Niroohavasti (Decoction-based-Enema) and Anuvasanavasti (Oil-induced-Enema).

Explaining the underlying principle of Ayurveda, Dr Keshavraj says that it is a science, dealing with the understanding of Tridoshas (three fundamental principles) i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha, that play a crucial role in diagnosis and treatment. “These three elements are responsible for all the physiological and psychological processes within the body and mind. Every physical characteristic, mental capacity and the emotional tendency of a human being can therefore be explained in terms of the Tridoshas,” he says.

According to Dr Keshavraj, ‘Vata’ (property of air) is necessary to mobilize the function of the nervous system. Pitta (Property of fire) uses bile to direct digestion and hence metabolism into the venous system. ‘Kapha’ is about the water principle which relates to mucous, lubrication and the carrier of nutrients into the arterial system. “An imbalance in the Tridoshas results in diseases and Ayurvedic practices aim to maintain an equilibrium, and hence harmony in the bodily functions,” he adds.

An acclaimed Ayurvedic practitioner in the region, Dr Keshavraj who practices pure Ayurveda allays concerns over the sedentary lifestyle and ever present pollution as the main cause of imbalance in Doshas.

“Urban pollution is a leading cause to several allergies, while sedentary lifestyle has become a main cause of Diabetes. Walking barefoot is very important, but unlike earlier days people barely touch their foot on the ‘earth’, which is one of the ‘Pancha Mahabhoota’,” he asserts.

He says it is a misconception that Ayurvedic medicine contains steroids. “It’s not true. Ayurveda does not contain any added steroids. There are some self-generated steroids in medicines, which are not harmful to human body,” he says.

Dr Keshavraj also advises people with back pain against participating in mass Yoga. Incorrect postures can aggravate the pain. One can instead focus on therapeutic yoga, which is an gentle approach that can be used to create space in areas that are compressed, relieve tight muscles and help induce the relaxation response when restorative postures are incorporated, he says.

With deep understanding of the concepts of Ayurveda, the ISO 9001:2015, certified hospital in Mangaluru is emphasising on the disease prevention, rejuvenation of body, extension of life and treating illness such as Arthritis, Spinal Disorder, Parkinsonism, Stress and Anxiety, Menstrual Disorders, Infertility, Autism, Psychological Disorders, Hormonal Imbalance, Sleep Disorders, Diabetes And Hypertension, Obesity, Paralysis, Skin Diseases, Sciatica, Psoriasis, Wheezing Problems, Bad Breath And Oral Disorders, Neck And Back Pain, Face, Sinus, Headache, Hair Fall And Dandruff, Knee Joint Pain, Urinary Tract Disease, Degenerative Diseases, Paralysis through lifestyle interventions, Ayurveda based natural therapies.
