Mangaluru: It is but impossible to not notice a colourful painting with a strong message when people enter or exit the city from Kottara as one of the flyover piers stands tall with a Swacch Bharath graffiti. As a part of the Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan organised by Sri Ramakrishna Mission every Sunday, a group of cleanliness driven youngsters painted the graffiti of Swacch Bharath on one of the piers of Kottara Chowki flyover.

The members of Kumar Gym take up monthly initiatives to spruce up Kottara Chowki area through Ramakrishna Mission. In their continued effort this month, they saw the pier patched up with posters of Kannada movies and thought of beautifying it by adding a touch of colours and spreading the messages on Gandhiji’s dream India.

“We had taken up some cleanliness drives in the past month but we kept seeing the cleaned up areas getting littered over and over again. We then knew that we had to come up with an innovative project to stop the littering and defacing of the flyover pillars with movie posters. This was when we decided to paint the entrance of the town from NH 66 with a painting that can create awareness about cleanliness”, said Kiran Kumar the owner of Kumar Gym.

So the young fitness freaks spared no stone unturned in rejuvenating the substandard poster filled pillar into a graffiti with a strong message under the guidance of artist Yashwanth Acharya. “In all, 40 fitness enthusiasts who come to my gym got together with 20 other localites to clean up the surrounding areas and paint a summary of the whole cleanliness drive in one self-explanatory picture”, Kiran added.

Since all of the enthusiasts have a day job, the schedule on Friday evening was fixed to clean up the area, Saturday evening to paint the white background and then they took up the 7 – 10 AM cleanliness drive slot on the regular Sunday morning to paint the pier. “Time was a constraint but manpower was not. As the outlines were made by few, the others painted them. And by organising time and effort, the team was able to complete the painting in the planned time slot of 2 and half hours”, Kiran mentioned while thanking Ramakrishna Mission for providing the painting accessories.

Kiran hoped that the message on the graffiti, “The Future Depends on What You Do Today” will strike the conscience of a person throwing away a wrapper or a smoker stubbing a cigarette butt on the road. In general, his message to the public was clear, “Do not litter so that there is nothing to clean up.”
