Here are the answers to the most commonly asked question on Zumba

What can I expect in a Zumba Class?

Each song is a different Latin rhythm, merengue, salsa, flamenco, samba, tango, reggae, cumbia, calypso, cha cha, belly dancing, hip hop and more. You will be playing with traditional and contemporary music styles and movements all put together to give you that great feeling of being immersed in the music. The warm up, cool down, cardio and toning are all built in and disguised by the awesome music and dance moves!

Zumba is fun but what are the benefits?

Zumba brings on the heat and burns off the calories! You can burn between 500-1000 calories in a Zumba class. The movements integrate the entire body toning arms chest, back, abdominals and legs. Nothing is left out. That is not all, Zumba is good for balance, co-ordination, for the heart and for the mind.  It really chases stress away and works you top to bottom, inside and out.

Why is it so popular?

It is fun, it is effective and it really is the best party in town.

Weight Loss

Another great fitness benefit associated with Zumba dancing is weight loss. This is one of the most common reasons that people choose to join group exercise classes such as Zumba. As stated above, Zumba is a type of cardiovascular exercise, and research has found that participating in cardiovascular exercise is the best way to lose weight.

For best results, try to track how many calories you burn during the workout, and use this to maximize your weight loss. For example, in one pound of fat there is 3500 calories. Therefore, if you want to lose one pound of weight per week, you must cut 500 calories from your diet per day. For the average person, engaging in Zumba dance for one hour will burn approximately 400 calories. Therefore, in order to reach your goal, you must cut an addition 100 calories from your diet.

How Zumba Got Started?

Celebrity fitness trainer, “Beto” Perez, stumbled upon the concept of Latin inspired fitness in his native country of Colombia (South America) in the mid 1990s. One day, he walked into his class and realized that he had forgotten his aerobics music, and his only option was to grab whatever tapes he had in his car. Betos tapes were comprised of the songs that he loved, the traditional Latin salsa and merengue music with which he had been raised. But it was a challenge to improvise a whole class on the spot using non-traditional aerobics music. Beto rose to the challenge and from this last-minute improvisation was born a revolutionary fitness program – Zumba! The class soon became the most popular class at his fitness facility.

In 1999, after his success in Colombia, Beto brought the class to the United States, where he was approached by entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion to create a global company based on the Zumba® fitness philosophy. The three young entrepreneurs then set a goal to offer Zumba classes all over the world.

Today, more than six million people all sizes, shapes and ages take weekly Zumba classes in over 50,000 locations across 75 countries. And the programs popularity keeps growing by leaps, bounds (and exhilarating dance steps).

With so many innovative ways to get fit, looks like it is going to be hard coming up with excuses to not exercise and stay healthy!
