Mangaluru: UXCEL, Institute for Excellence, in collaboration with philanthropists and people of good will, have decided to provide a delicious meal and a gift of a T-shirt to males and a nightie to the females, to share the joy of Christmas with the inmates of Mangaluru Jail on December 26.

Speaking to NewsKarnataka, Prof. Maria Phyllis D’Costa, Director of UXCEL said, “Every year, I look for a service project, which will enthuse the members of UXCEL to do some service to society. This year’s project 2021 was already done, when we honoured 192 Covid warriors at KMC Attavar on August 15. However, when I was meditating in the early hours of the morning, I was inspired to go to the prison in Mangaluru. But getting into prison is not easy, as we need special permission. Somehow, a good policeman came my way and I along with my staff member, Savitha Salian, got the required permission to visit the prison.”

D’Costa went on to say, that she spoke to the superintendent and expressed her wish to provide books for the inmates to spend their time gainfully and furnish meal for the inmates as a gift. He told her that they had a library and even gave them an opportunity to have a look at it.

Her visit to the prison was an experience and an event that can’t be wiped out from memory, she said. She couldn’t sleep the night after she had entered the prison gates. “I know the true value of freedom today and I have realised, its importance even more, after visiting the dismal prison,” she added.

She further expressed that any citizen could participate in a service initiative and contribute to society without any difficulty. “The instant you say that it is a service project by UXCEL, the funds just come because people are very sure that their money will be used well. Getting funds is not an issue once people realise that you are sincere and honest. Within four days, I have received a sum of Rs. 1.15 lakh. I already have placed an order for biryani for all the 317 inmates and the prison staff, who do their duty tirelessly,” she added. She has also placed an order for good quality, comfortable T-shirts for men and nighties for women.

“Come, let us serve a genuine cause together. The joy of service is infinite,” she said.
