As educational institutes have stepped forward to do their bit in helping people affected by Covid-19, the Mangalore Jesuit Education Society (MJES), in collaboration with the St. Aloysius College Alumni Association (SACAA), has launched a Covid Care Centre in the campus. The team provides weekly provision kits and Covid-19 essentials to marginalised, college students, parents, patients and to the daily wagers in the city.

Speaking to News Karnataka, Fr Cyril D’Mello SJ, Coordinator, Disaster Management Committee, St. Aloysius Covid Care Centre said that, “The DC gave his approval to set up Covid Care Centre in the campus. Last year we offered help to the migrant workers. This year, we’re focusing on helping families who are affected by Covid. We initiated our activities by contacting most of Mangaluru’s non-government organisations. Following that, we were able to narrow down the current requirements of the city to a list of seven to eight.”

So far, the team has been able to distribute 900 food kits, mostly to Covid-affected homes. “We have our own Covid Warriors’ Team and we help people who are in need of medications or who are unable to pay their medical bills. The help desk team provide assistance through our helpline numbers in maintaining connectivity between hospitals and patients, informing them about how to proceed, as well as where to locate beds, oxygen beds, ventilators, and other services,” said Cyril.

The community radio station, Radio Sarang 107.8 has been broadcasting awareness programmes to its listeners. He said that around 25 people are working behind this initiative. “The general public is also given access to counselling services provide by the college. We have also arranged free meals as well as a Covid Care Centre for police officers in the city free of cost.”

“The public’s response has been overwhelmingly positive. We are planning to reach out to a larger number of people by collecting unused medicines and redistributing them to those in greatest need,” added Cyril.

The situation today is quite alarming he says and requests everyone to help one another. Through this initiative the team hopes to bring joy in every family they help.
