Mangaluru: Coastal land, Mangaluru, the land that has been created with the holy axe of Lord Parashuram as per legend and at the same time is a confluence of various cultures and religions.
Number of generations have passed in harmony and now in the present times we are witnessing rise of violence and murders committed in the name of religion.
However, our land is of unity in diversity wherein our lives are dependent on each other. For instance, Mogaveeras are into fishing while the Beary community are into fishing business, thus being inter-dependent. Infact it is the diversity of the religion what makes the coastal land, the land of Secularism.
However, the scenario is slowly shifting with numerous cases of riots and violence being witnessed in the name of religion. Every religion has its own perspective and its own ideologies. No religion in its holy book have ever mentioned to fight with the people of other community. But with the tendency to have a dominant religion in the society the minds of the people are diverted by some of the powerful identities of the communities. The people who follow these ideologies have an intense belief that one’s own religion is supreme than the others.
The recent murders that have been witnessed by the people of the coastal region has been horrific. We are in a position where we can judge that the one who will propagate will not be the victim but the one who follows it. Many murders which have been committed in the coastal region are not due to grudge or a business rivalry but it as come to light that they were communal murders. The tension between the communities are growing in a rapid pace and the coastal land has become a sensitive area where anything can happen at anytime.
