Mobile jammer in jail jams networks of Mangaluru public

Mangaluru: The mobile jammer installed in the Mangaluru district sub-jail in order to check illegal activities in the jail have turned a nightmare to the locals as the device has adversely affected mobile networks in the vicinity. Ever since the jammer has been installed, people are unable to enjoy a hassle-free phone call service.

The jammer was installed on Friday evening on a trial basis. Since then, no network has been able to provide a quality service to its customers due to frequent fluctuations in their frequencies. Though the public went clueless about their failure of mobile connections on the first day, the police then made it clear that the jammers are the reason for the mishap.

Most affected network was the BSNL as majority of its customers in the area use a 2G connection. The frequency of the 2G network is directly proportional to the frequency of the jammer. Though the rest of the mobile consumer base did not face the heat as much as the BSNL, as their 3G network frequency is almost double as of the 2G, there was certainly a great decline in quality of call service.

According to a police official attached to the jail, the jammer requires atleast a week’s time to tune it to a wavelength suitable to restrict it to the premises of the jail. According to his statement, the problem would persist until this Friday. However, as the public grievances were on the rise, the jail authorities on Tuesday morning got technicians to fix the issue.

Myna, a resident of Bejai, said that she is unable to talk to her husband in London since Saturday. She said that she kept contacting him from various numbers, however the signal broke in all the phone numbers. It is only on Sunday she learnt about the installation of jammer and opined that the jail authorities should chalk out measures to restrict the impact of the new device to the jail premises.

Seenappa, a resident of Alake, said that he only has a BSNL sim and is unable to make or receive calls since four days.

Talking to News Karnataka today, an official said that the technicians have reduced the height of the jammer to check if it can normalize mobile networks. He said that the technicians will visit offices of mobile operators and verify if regular functioning of the respective networks have been restored. If not, they will visit the jail premises tomorrow and further work towards fixing the issue.

In a bid to ensure discipline in the jail, the public is made to bear the consequences.
