Speed Restrictions Imposed on Coastal Karnataka National Highways Due to Heavy Rains
Continuous heavy rains have led to significant damage on sections of national highways in coastal Karnataka, prompting the imposition of speed restrictions to ensure commuter safety.
Speed limits have been enforced on National Highway (NH) 66, covering the stretch from Surathkal to Thokkottu junction, and on NH-73 from BC Road to Nanthoor junction. To prevent accidents and manage road safety effectively, the speed limit has been set at 40 km/h for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and heavy vehicles. Additionally, highway users are advised not to exceed a maximum speed of 60 km/h due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
These measures have been introduced following an advisory from the project director and highway maintenance officials of the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) project implementation unit. The heavy rains have caused deterioration in road conditions, including potential hazards such as potholes and slippery surfaces, which necessitate the speed restrictions.
Commuters are urged to adhere to these speed limits and exercise caution while traveling on these affected highway sections to prevent accidents and ensure road safety. The authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will adjust the restrictions as needed based on the weather and road conditions.
