Spike in Road Deaths Alarms Haveri Authorities
Haveri district has witnessed a troubling surge in road accident deaths in 2024, revealed District Superintendent of Police (SP) Anshukumar. Addressing the press at his office, he noted a rise from 280 fatalities in 2023 to 300 in 2024.
While mishaps on National Highway 48 have decreased in both frequency and severity, the SP raised concern over a notable increase in collisions on State and District roads, as well as in rural areas. “The leading cause remains reckless and inattentive driving. We’ve placed cautionary signboards in high-risk zones and are taking consistent steps to bring down casualty numbers,” he said.
Efforts are underway in coordination with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and other departments to improve road safety awareness. The SP stressed the importance of precautionary measures, urging motorcyclists to always wear helmets and car occupants to buckle up. He further recommended checking vehicle fitness before travel and avoiding nighttime driving when feasible.
SP Anshukumar emphasized that reducing road mishaps requires both strict enforcement and personal accountability. Police are focusing on accident-prone areas with targeted safety interventions.
Offering a civilian viewpoint, local commuter Santosh Aladakatti said safety truly begins with the driver. “Awareness and alertness can prevent most tragedies. Though authorities are doing their part, it’s ultimately our duty to protect ourselves and others. Distractions like mobile phones, drunk driving, and ignoring traffic rules can cost lives,” he cautioned.
