Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya continued his strong run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), delivering a tight four-over spell for Baroda against Gujarat in Hyderabad on Thursday. After impressing with the bat in Baroda’s earlier match against Punjab, he showcased his bowling rhythm by conceding just 16 runs and dismissing Gujarat captain Urvil Patel at a crucial moment. His control and consistency reinforced the steady form he has built throughout the tournament.
Pandya’s disciplined performance comes at an important time for India, whose ODI attack has leaked runs in the ongoing series against South Africa. His sharp spell has offered a welcome boost to the Indian camp ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series.
A light-hearted moment from the match also went viral: while attempting to accelerate a modest 74-run chase, Pandya mistimed a big hit off Ravi Bishnoi and was caught by Arzan Nagwaswalla. Bishnoi celebrated in his trademark style, and Pandya joined him playfully before giving him a hug—an exchange that quickly won fans over online. He scored 10 runs, but Baroda comfortably sealed victory by 8 wickets in just 6.4 overs.
Pandya returns to India squad
The 32-year-old made a strong comeback to domestic cricket earlier in the season, scoring 77 not out and taking a wicket against Punjab. His performances cemented his return to fitness after a quadriceps injury suffered during the Asia Cup, which kept him out of India’s tours of Australia and South Africa.
Following his SMAT success, Pandya has been named in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series in South Africa as he resumes his international duties.
