India vs South Africa 2015: India lost but why?

Mumbai: The One Day International Series (ODI) Series, begins on Oct 11. But the Indian team is in doldrums. It needs to regroup under the same captain if it wants to present a good account of itself in the new series. There seem to be many reasons for the defeat.

Some of them include selection errors, where tried and tested players were preferred to upcoming stars of the IPL.  Investing in youngsters would have been a good decision as the ICC World T20 is just a year away.the likes of Gurkeerat Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Deepak Hooda, who are reputed T20 players could easily have been tried out. Rahane too was ignored though he was in the team. He could have lent solidity.

The opening partnersips were absent. They are the key to a good total, and could have laid the foundation for an attack in the death overs. Shikhar Dhawan’s dry run of 3 and 11 at Dharamsala and Cuttack failed to enthuse. Dhawan’s T20I career, shows an average of 14.37 from 8 games. A better option perhaps would have been Robin Uthappa.

On the bowling front, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sreenath Aravind, and Mohit Sharma looked ordinary and struggled to bowl in the death overs in the first game – they had neither pace, nor swing. Thier lines were wonky and control over length was woeful. Ishant, Aaron and Shami were solely missed.

And then there was the BCCI’s stubbornness. It refuses to acknowledge that the Decision Review System (DRS) can ever be helpful to India. Duminy survived two close LBW calls, once early in his innings while he was on 5 and later on 33. It appeared that he was out on both the occasions in the first T20. Is it time to take a review on the DRS?

If the team’s combined effort was poor, Dhoni’s leadership was pathetic. His leadership needed a boosting win after his last assignment saw a drubbing at the hands of former minnows Bangladesh. Is he running out of steam, ideas and luck. Is it time for a change of change of guard?
