In 2019, there were around 300 million online gamers in India. By 2022, that figure is expected to reach 440 million. With that many players, it may not be surprising to learn that India ranked highest of all countries in 2019 for the number of online game downloads on app stores. Who are these millions of Indian gamers? Find out what makes up player profiles in India by checking out the following gamer statistics.

What is online gaming?
Online gaming refers to video games played on the internet. Online games include all genres, including puzzle, action, real-time strategy, combat, simulation, and adventure. There are also a variety of online slot games and table games that you can play at online casinos. For instance, this online casino features a range of great games like Legacy of Egypt and Starburst.

How old are Indian online gamers?
According to a 2017 study by KPMG in India and Google, nearly 60% of Indian online gamers are below the age of 24. This age range is more exposed to technology and online platforms, so it makes sense that they make up the most significant proportion of online gamers. However, acceptance of online gaming in India is becoming considerably high among older age groups too. Here is a look at how the numbers break down:

  • 59% of online gamers are under 24 years of age.
  • 22% are between the ages of 25 and 30.
  • 8% are between the ages of 31 and 35.
  • 7% are over the age of 40.
  • 4% are between the ages of 36 and 40.

Which gender plays online games the most?
There is a considerably higher number of males playing online video games than there are females, according to the study. A whopping 83% of online gamers are male. But that imbalance is not too surprising when you consider 80% of urban internet users in India are male. Therefore, proportionally, there is a similar propensity of online gaming in both genders. When it comes to heavy gaming, nearly a quarter of online males are heavy-gamers while only 15% of females heavily game. A heavy gamer spends an average of 55 minutes of playing games every day.

Why do Indian people play online games?
The research study found 42% of Indian online gamers played games to relieve stress. And 38% of players said they played games for social interaction. That is, of course, one of the main benefits of playing online games as opposed to console games, as online gamers can play against friends or strangers from around the world.

What types of games do Indian online gamers play?
Over half of Indians are unanimous in which genre of game they like playing the most. A massive 54% of heavy gamers in India play online puzzle games. The next favorite genre is action games. 49% of heavy-gamers play these adrenaline-rush games. Here is a look at the other most popular choices of online game genres for heavy-gamers:

  • Adventure: 40%
  • Arcade: 37%
  • Racing: 34%
  • Sports: 31%
  • Strategy: 30%
  • Skill-based: 17%
  • Chance-based: 12%

Although the percentages are different for casual online gamers, the running order remains the same. So, puzzles, action games, and adventure games are the clear winning favorites of India’s online players.

What genres do different genders play the most?
How do those numbers break down across the different genders? The study found females significantly prefer puzzle games, while male online gamers prefer action and sports games. Adventure games and strategy games have a similar resonance for both genders.

What genres do different age groups play the most?
The study’s statistics show that some game genres are favored more by different age groups. Nearly half of online gamers under the age of 24 enjoy playing action games the most. Sports games are also the preference of players under the age of 24 more than any other age group. Meanwhile, over 50% of gamers between the ages of 35 and 54 like playing puzzle games the most.
