Student commits suicide after being denied permission to leave hostel
A 19-year-old Dalit homeopathy student made a desperate call to her cousin, pleading to be taken to a doctor. Soon after, she phoned again, saying she wasn’t allowed to leave campus. Hours later, she ended her life in her hostel room.
Her suicide note read, “My death will help my friends.” The incident on 29 January has ignited fury, exposing alleged harassment at Merchant Homoeopathic Medical College, Gujarat. Following student protests, the institution shut down for four days.
Authorities arrested four professors and the principal for abetting suicide, though they have since been released on bail. Peers claim she endured months of public humiliation, threats, and unwarranted punishments. In her note, she likened her tormentors to “demons” and the “god of death.”
The victim’s father, Parvin Shrimali, a lawyer, was devastated. “I trusted teachers, never imagined this,” he lamented. He revealed she had dreamed of becoming a doctor and had worked tirelessly to achieve it.
Students allege that bullying is widespread, masked as “discipline.” Reports suggest professors used demeaning language, enforced arbitrary punishments, and even engaged in inappropriate behavior. Despite the uproar, the accused continue to deny the claims.
With exams approaching, fear grips students who protested. “We are afraid this will affect our future,” a classmate admitted. Investigations continue, but justice remains uncertain.
