
Student’s Death in Karnataka Triggers Investigation and Public Outcry
Authorities in Karnataka’s Haveri district are investigating the tragic death of a 22-year-old college student, Shilpa, from Chikkamallur village in Shiggaon taluk. A BCA student in Belagavi, she was found dead on Saturday in a suspected case of suicide.
According to preliminary reports, Shilpa had been facing alleged harassment via phone calls. The police have registered a case and launched an inquiry to determine the events leading up to her death.
Investigators are probing the role of a local shop owner, who reportedly obtained her contact information under unclear circumstances. Police sources said there had been earlier disputes involving individuals known to both parties, and these may have contributed to the situation. A case has been filed at the Belagavi Market Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
Political leaders and community members have reacted strongly to the incident. Former Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Basavaraj Bommai called for a fair and transparent investigation and urged authorities to ensure justice for the family. Social groups and student organizations have also expressed their concerns, calling for greater protection for students and timely action in such cases.
