Summer causes increase in fire accidents across Karnataka
The Karnataka Fire Department reports that 80% of fire emergencies occur within the first five months of the year. In 2024 alone, 18,900 out of 23,832 fire calls were received between January and May, with March witnessing the highest at 5,700. Bengaluru alone recorded 2,947 calls, resulting in 13 deaths.
Major fire causes include electrical short-circuits, though incidents from LPG leaks, industrial fires, and chemical accidents have declined. Last year, fires claimed 48 lives and injured 201 people, with property losses exceeding ₹330 crore. Over the past three years, fire-related damages have reached nearly ₹1,000 crore.
Fire & Emergency Services Director TN Shivashankar emphasized the importance of awareness, stating that most fires are preventable. The department actively conducts safety training, mock drills, and public awareness programs at the RA Mundkur Academy and in high-density areas.
Human negligence remains a key factor, with officials noting that 99% of LPG cylinder incidents occur in the morning due to improper handling. Additionally, North Karnataka districts see high fire incidents due to forested regions. Officials urge citizens to adopt fire safety practices to minimize risks.
