Karnataka is experiencing the highest surge in dengue cases in a decade, with Bengaluru emerging as a major hotspot. As of August 12, the state reported 22,442 positive cases, surpassing the previous 10-year high of 19,300 infections recorded in 2023. This year has also seen 10 deaths attributed to dengue.
Key Points:
- Bengaluru’s Impact: BBMP areas have reported 10,175 positive cases, nearly 46% of the state’s total. This year’s figures are approaching the 10-year high of 11,136 cases in 2023.
- Decrease in Daily Cases: BBMP Health Commissioner Suralkar Vikas Kishor noted a decrease in daily cases from 200 to 100, with ongoing prevention measures like fogging and inspections for dengue black spots continuing until October.
- Possible Reasons for Surge: Factors contributing to the increase include improved testing and reporting, changing climate with extended monsoons, and rising population density with more migrants. The proliferation of breeding sites, especially in apartments, remains a significant concern.
- Testing Statistics: Testing numbers have risen significantly from 13,340 in 2014 to 1,57,120 in 2024. BBMP alone conducted 47,718 tests by mid-August 2024.
