Surge in Power Demand Across Karnataka as Temperatures Rise
As temperatures soared, Karnataka’s electricity demand surged, prompting a significant increase in power generation across the state. Notably, thermal power stations in Ballari and Raichur have ramped up their output to meet the growing demand. Until February, the state’s cooler climate, bolstered by ample rainfall, kept many thermal power units idle. However, since mid-March, rising temperatures in all districts have led to a sharp increase in electricity consumption, largely driven by the widespread use of fans, air coolers, and air conditioners.
In response to this, all power generation stations have been working at full capacity. According to Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), the state’s power demand has surpassed 18,000 MW in recent months, peaking at 18,395 MW in March. Projections for April suggest that demand may reach 18,500 MW. With an installed capacity of 34,000 MW—comprised of thermal, hydroelectric, and renewable energy sources—the state is well-equipped to meet the rising demand.
Thermal power plants contribute 3,300 MW, hydropower adds 2,000 MW, while solar and wind energy sources account for 6,655 MW and 1,940 MW, respectively. During the summer months, hydroelectric generation tends to dip, while thermal generation picks up to compensate.
KPCL sources have reassured residents that there will be no power shortages this year, as thermal plants have adequate raw materials. Uday Naik N, Chief Engineer at Ballari Thermal Power Station (BTPS), confirmed that power output will continue to increase as demand rises. Currently, two of BTPS’s three units are generating 531 MW, while one is offline for minor repairs. Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) is generating 888 MW despite two units being temporarily offline. Yeramaras Thermal Power Station (YTPS) is also operating at 1,071 MW from its 1,600 MW capacity.
Naik further assured that the remaining unit at BTPS will be back in operation by the weekend, ensuring adequate power for the summer.
