BEML Inaugurates Prototype Manufacturing of Driverless Metro Trainsets for Bengaluru Metro
BEML Limited, previously known as Bharat Earth Movers Limited, has launched the prototype manufacturing of driverless metro trainsets under the 5RS-DM Project. This initiative is part of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation’s (BMRCL) ambitious expansion, including Lines 2 and 6, and the Bangalore Airport Line.
In an official statement, BEML highlighted the significance of this milestone in contributing to urban mobility solutions. The company secured a contract in August 2023 to supply 53 trainsets, valued at approximately ₹3,177 crores. The project involves the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of these trainsets, along with comprehensive maintenance services for up to 15 years under the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2, 2A, and 2B.
Features of Driverless Trainsets
The trainsets, developed by BEML’s in-house engineering teams in Bengaluru, will feature a 6-car formation constructed from high-tensile Austenitic stainless steel. This design ensures durability, safety, and passenger comfort. Key features include:
- Air Conditioning:Each metro car will be equipped with two roof-mounted Saloon Air Conditioners to maintain effective air conditioning throughout the journey.
- Passenger Information Systems: The trains will have an IP-based Passenger Announcement (PA) and Passenger Information System (PIS), along with a Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS) to provide real-time station information. Additionally, an LCD-based Dynamic Route Map display will enhance passenger navigation.
- Safety Features: Electrically driven automatic doors will be synchronized with Platform Screen Doors to ensure passenger safety.
- Interior Design:The interiors will include aesthetically designed FRP panels, stainless steel grab poles, grab rails with strap hangers, and ergonomic stainless-steel seats with lumbar support for increased comfort.
BEML’s efforts to enhance urban mobility through this project underline its commitment to developing advanced and passenger-friendly metro systems, furthering Bengaluru’s public transport infrastructure.
