Tourist Car Overturns in Malnad Rains, Passengers Rescued by Brave Local
Chikkamagaluru: A tourist vehicle overturned near Chakkamakki village in Mudigere taluk on Sunday, May 25, following intense rains and gusty winds that have been lashing Karnataka’s Malnad region.
The car reportedly skidded off the wet road, lost control, and plunged into a stream connected to the Hemavathi River. Slippery terrain and poor visibility due to the relentless downpour are believed to have caused the mishap.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver failed to maintain control during the heavy rainfall, leading to the vehicle’s fall into the water. Fortunately, a major tragedy was averted thanks to the swift and courageous action of local social worker Arif.
Displaying exceptional bravery, Arif tied a rope around his waist and climbed down into the stream, risking his own safety to rescue the passengers trapped inside the overturned vehicle. His timely intervention ensured that all the occupants were safely pulled out with only minor injuries. The injured were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
The Banakal Police Station has registered a case and is investigating the circumstances leading to the incident. Authorities have once again urged tourists and drivers to exercise extreme caution while travelling in hilly areas during the monsoon season.
This incident marks another reminder of the dangers of driving during adverse weather in the Western Ghats.
