UCSL Delivers First ‘Make in India’ Cargo Ship to Norway’s Largest Short Sea Operator
Mangaluru: In a major boost to India’s maritime manufacturing sector, Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited (UCSL) delivered the first of six 3800 TDW dry cargo vessels to Wilson Ship Management A S, Norway’s leading short-sea shipping company. The handover took place at the New Mangalore Port on Wednesday.
The newly built cargo ship is an all-weather, ocean-going vessel, certified with unmanned engine room operations and equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems, conforming to current international class and flag regulations.
The vessel delivery is a proud moment under the ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ initiative, showcasing India’s growing capabilities in shipbuilding. The ship is constructed entirely from Indian-made steel, including its intricate piping systems—underscoring the country’s drive for self-reliance.
Over the past three years, UCSL has been actively contributing to national infrastructure goals. Its accomplishments include:
-
Eight aluminium hull boats for the Kochi Water Metro Project,
-
Eight Tuna long liner-cum-gillnetter fishing vessels under PM Matsya Sampada Yojana,
-
Multiple high-capacity Bollard Pull Tugs for Adani Harbour Services and Polestar Maritime.
In addition to current projects, UCSL has secured orders for eleven more 70T Bollard Pull Tugs with Ocean Sparkle Ltd and one with Polestar Maritime.
To commemorate the vessel’s christening, Dr. Sushma Akkaraju, wife of New Mangalore Port Authority Chairman, Dr. Venkata Ramana Akkaraju, officially named the ship. Senior officials from Wilson AS, including Einar Torsnes and Sergey Bogdashov, along with UCSL CEO Harikumar A, attended the ceremony.
