Kundapur: The Udupi District Hospital administration is once again in the news, this time for almost cremating a youth who recently passed away instead of sexagenarian in Kundapur on August 23.

The mistake came to light when the family members demanded to view their deceased relative’s body. Raged by the mixup, the locals and family members staged a protest at the burial ground and accused the hospital authorities of irresponsibility.

“Our father was well. They (district hospital) are responsible for his death and are now giving us someone else’s body to cremate. There is foul play in the handling of the COVID cases,” the family claimed.

It all started when a 60-year-old man from Koteshwara was admitted to the Kundapura hospital for back pain. On June 30, he was moved to the Udupi COVID hospital after he tested positive for COVID-19 and he succumbed on August 23 without responding to treatment.

The hospital authorities called the deceased person’s son over the phone and informed him about his father’s death due to COVID. They also informed that his father’s cremation will be conducted as per the district administration’s SOP.

According to the wishes of the family, the mortal remains were brought to a burial ground near Kundapura’s Sangam, which is when they demanded to view the body. After wearing the PPE kits, five members of the family were allowed to view the body. However, they were surprised to see a young man’s body instead of their deceased relative.

They protesters urged the DC to visit the spot and give an explanation. Later, Kundapurua Assistant Commissioner Raju and Taluk Health officer Nagabushan visited the spot and pacified the protesters.

Later the body of the deceased relative was brought and the cremation was conducted under the supervision of the family.

It can be recalled that on August 22, protests sparked after a woman who died after taking out-patient treatment from the district hospital.
