Manipal: A final-year Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) student was arrested by the Udupi Police on Sunday as he was found to be in possession of 488 MDMA pills estimated to be worth Rs 15 lakhs.
The engineering student, who the police identified as 20-year-old Himanshu Joshi, ordered the drugs on the dark web and was trying to sell the same to other students.
Soon after his arrest, the student was suspended by the institution.
According to a report by TNM, the police informed that Joshi, who hailed from Noida and was living in a rented house in Manipal, was caught red-handed when he was trying to sell the MDMA tablets near the Sheembra bridge.
From the accused, police also seized his mobile phone and a two-wheeler, apart from the drugs.
According to reports, the team that arrested Joshi was led by Superintendent of Police Vishnuvardhan, additional police superintendent Kumarchandra, DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) of Udupi Manjunath M Gowda, Internal Security Division police inspector Jai Shankar, and other personnel from the Manipal station.
The pollice are now probing the involvement of an entire drug racket and trying to figure out hoe the drugs were procured through the dark web. SP Vishnuvardhan also expressed confusion over why students were arriving from outside when the colleges have not yet officially reopened.
