UK Science Secretary Supports Supervised ChatGPT Use for Children’s Homework
Peter Kyle, Britain’s Science and Technology Secretary, has voiced support for children using ChatGPTwith supervision to aid their homework, highlighting the technology’s potential when used responsibly. Speaking in an interview with the BBC, Mr. Kyle emphasized the value of AI in education, stating, “With supervision and used in the right way, then yes, because ChatGPT and the AI technology that is using language is already being used across the economy.”
Drawing a parallel to the introduction of calculators in schools decades ago, he argued for integrating new technologies into the learning process. “I am of an age where I remember this conversation about calculators. We need to ensure that young people learn how to use this technology and incorporate it into their development,” Mr. Kyle explained.
While ChatGPT, an advanced AI chatbot powered by large language models, has sparked debates over its potential misuse in education, Mr. Kyle believes it can enhance learning, particularly for students with exceptional abilities. He highlighted that the tool could “turbo-charge” intellectual growth, offering unique learning challenges for gifted children that they might not otherwise encounter.
The Labour government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, plans to reveal an AI Action Plan this week, aiming to capitalize on the technology’s potential to boost the UK economy. Kyle criticized the previous Conservative administration’s cautious stance and vowed that the Labour approach would balance AI safety with innovation.
