Vijayapura: Police apprehended Mahesh, a burglar from Madhya Pradesh, following a dramatic pursuit, officials said on Friday. Mahesh was part of a four-member gang linked to recent housebreaking incidents in Vijayapura city over the past week.
“Several thefts have been reported in Vijayapura District, where burglars threatened residents with weapons and looted valuables. Three FIRs have been registered,” stated Vijayapura Superintendent of Police, Laxman Nimbargi. The gang allegedly assaulted a man and snatched a gold chain from his wife during a robbery.
On Thursday, police traced the gang to Kanakadasa Layout. After breaking into a house, the family raised an alarm, alerting the authorities. The suspects attempted to flee on a bike, but two of them fell near a weighing bridge, sustaining injuries before escaping.
Around 5 am on Friday, police located Mahesh at Spandana Hospital, armed with a weapon. “When he tried to attack our team, an officer fired at him, but he managed to escape under the cover of darkness,” Nimbargi explained. Due to his injuries, Mahesh collapsed in a nearby field and was subsequently admitted to a hospital. The remaining three gang members are on the run.
In related incidents, Karnataka has faced two major robberies in the past two days. On Thursday, armed bikers killed two security guards and stole ₹93 lakh cash in Bidar. On Friday, robbers looted ₹10-12 crore worth of valuables from Sahakari Sangh Bank in Kotekar, Mangaluru.
