Warn of Water Contamination Risks Amidst Scorching Heat in Dakshina Kannada
As the relentless heat continues to affect Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, health authorities have issued a warning about the potential risks of contaminated water, which could lead to an increase in illnesses. The scorching weather conditions have prompted officials to urge the public to remain vigilant about water quality, as contamination could exacerbate health issues.
Last Year’s Food Poisoning Outbreak
In the wake of last year’s extreme heat, the district saw a significant spike in food poisoning cases, with both private and government hospitals in Mangaluru and surrounding coastal areas reporting incidents. One of the most alarming cases involved a college hostel, where a widespread food poisoning outbreak grabbed headlines. Experts believe that the combination of high temperatures and changes in water quality contributed significantly to the incidents.
Contaminated Water and Health Risks
While food poisoning is common during summer due to various factors, contaminated water remains a primary cause. Poor water quality can lead to not only food poisoning but also more serious health conditions. In Mangaluru city, water shortages have led to increased reliance on water tankers. However, the authorities, including the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) and the health department, have yet to address concerns about the source, quality, and cleanliness of tanker water. The lack of reports on these factors is adding to the concern.
Steps Being Taken by Health Authorities
Dr. Thimmaiah, the District Health Officer (DHO) of DK, acknowledged the issues faced by many hostels in the previous year due to poor water quality. He shared that hostels were directed to submit water quality affidavits and that efforts are being made to address these concerns. “We are planning to have discussions with the MCC Commissioner regarding the quality of tanker water,” said Dr. Thimmaiah.
Public Health Advisory
As the heatwave continues, the public is advised to prioritize access to safe drinking water and maintain high standards of hygiene. Special attention should be paid to water sources, particularly during the summer months when contamination risks are at their peak.
