WhatsApp to end support for over 20 Android phones in 2025
WhatsApp, the world’s leading messaging platform with nearly 2 billion monthly users, continues to be a vital link for personal and professional connections. However, starting January 1, 2025, the app will no longer function on over 20 Android phones. The reason? These devices run outdated software, particularly Android 4.4 KitKat or earlier versions.
As reported by HDblog, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is withdrawing support for older devices to prioritize security and enhanced functionality. The affected smartphones, many over a decade old, lack compatibility with modern features. Though technically logical, this change might inconvenience those still reliant on these aging models.
Brands like HTC and LG, which have exited the smartphone market, are on the list. Notable models include Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Moto G (1st Gen), HTC Desire 500, LG Nexus 4, and Sony Xperia Z.
If your device is impacted, don’t worry—WhatsApp advises users to back up their chats before the deadline. To save your conversations, go to WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Backup, and link to a Google account. This ensures your chats can be seamlessly restored on a new device.
For those clinging to older phones, now is the time to upgrade. The market offers numerous affordable and feature-rich options to explore.
